“From an NIH perspective, its 11% of funding is going to women's health research, which is over 50% of the population, just as one example. So I think that for various reasons, people have inherent biases and they invest in things that they're comfortable with, and they know better. And I think that there's a lot of opportunity to look at areas that are a little bit more uncomfortable for you and areas that might kind of spark your interest, but to be able to expand your horizons and to really ask the questions about why haven't people done something there?"

In this podcast episode, we sit down with Tracy Dooley, M.D., a partner at Avestria Ventures, and Dov Shamir, Ph.D., Head of Elementa Labs at Mount Sinai Innovation Partners—a part of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, to discuss the future of health care & wellness, how to navigate regulation, and the role of collaboration in the commercialization of health & biotech innovation.

Dov Shamir, Ph.D., leads the Mount Sinai Health Systems newly established Elementa Labs, an incubator program powered by the health systems commercialization office, Mount Sinai Innovation Partners. The incubator helps strategically position external healthcare and biotechnology startup companies for the next stage in their development.

Tracy Dooley is a Partner at Avestria Ventures where she invests in early-stage medtech, health tech, and life science companies. Prior to joining Avestria, Tracy was a digital health & innovation consultant for clients including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Novartis, and early-stage startups. Previous to that, she served as Head of Global Operations at Novartis Diagnostics/Grifols, after leading strategy & innovation efforts. Tracy started her career as a healthcare M&A investment banker.
